詳細な用途はともあれ、流動床は空気またはガスのクッション上に浮遊しているときに製品を処理するよう設計されています。プロセスエアは、穴のあいた特殊な分配プレートに供給され、粒子の重量を流動状態で支えるのに充分な速度で固体の床を流れます。材料の流動床内で泡ができてははじけ、粒子の激しい動きが促進されます。この状態のとき、固体は自由に流れる沸騰液のように振る舞います。
固体との親密な接触および各粒子と流動化ガス間の速度差の結果として、非常に高い熱と物質移動値が得られます。
